Wellness Champion!
UAS Road Scholars
For the past seven years, they've come together for the camaraderie, challenge, and fun. This year was no different. A group of UAS staff, faculty, and students joined in the 26th running of the Klondike Road Relay, a 100+ mile middle-of-the-night race from Skagway, Alaska, following the trail of the Gold Rush Stampeders over the famous White Pass, through British Columbia, into Whitehorse, Yukon Territory.
"It's a crazy race, but it's a great chance to get to know others outside the work environment," Michael Ciri, unofficial team co-captain said. "Our team is not in it to win; we're in it to finish and have fun. And we can do that thanks to the support of our chancellor, who funds the entry fee." According to Michael there were "quite a collection of UAS people" running the race, not just on his team. Over 1,000 runners participate in more than 120 teams. (See the Outstanding Achievements section for a listing of who we know about.)
Road Scholars participants included:
Leg 1: Jennifer Barranco (student staff)
Leg 2: Chip McMillan (education faculty)
Leg 3: Amelia Jenkins (library faculty)
Leg 4: Forest Kvasnikoff (student staff)
Leg 5: Cody Bennett (ITS staff) and Heather Beaudette
(arts & sciences/activities & housing staff)
Leg 6: Michael Ciri (ITS staff)
Leg 7: Jennifer Ward (library faculty)
Leg 8: Forest Wagner (ods faculty)
Leg 9: Dan Monteith (social sciences faculty)
Leg 10: Alex Simon (social sciences faculty)
Support 1: Britteny Cioni (economics faculty)
Support 2: Haley Poole (student)
Michael admits that he's not always been fitness oriented. It wasn't until he started exercising and lost 40 pounds that he realized how good he could feel. So, this run for him is also about staying fit. "I'm not really a runner; I've never experienced that 'runners high' I've heard serious runners talk about. But I like to hang with runners, so I've got to keep up," Michael explained. "Last spring I started thinking about training for the race, remembering how the final two miles of my relay leg last year were really tough. I needed to make sure that didn't happen again. So, I registered for Individualized Health Planning (IHP) sessions and my wellness consultant, Stephanie, put me on a training plan. It was a success! I finished my 16-mile, 3 am leg of the race without complaint. I am an IHP believer."
Congratulations, Road Scholars for showing how fitness with your coworkers can be fun!
