Ima's Four-week Evaluation
Being Active and feeling great
During the first four weeks of Ima's new healthy and active lifestyle, her strength has increased due to her nervous system adapting to the good stress placed on her body. The good stress is due to the resistance training her Wellness Consultant added to her exercise plan.
Getting in her cardio workouts have not been easy. But, her Wellness Consultant tells her not to get down on herself. Her Wellness Consultant has a wealth of knowledge about all things healthy and gave her some very good information about the benefits of her strength training.
Ima's Wellness Consultant on Strength Training
Even though a resistance or strengthening program does not burn as many calories as aerobic activity, it can increase the amount of calories the body burns at rest, which is called the basal metabolic rate. This rate is directly related to the amount of lean muscle mass in our bodies. A pound of muscle can burn up to 40-50 more calories a day than a pound of fat.
An additional role of strength training as a part of a healthy lifestyle is due to its role in preventing loss of bone mass and osteoporosis. Strengthening also maintains or improves our ability to function throughout our day with activities like transitioning to standing from sitting, climbing stairs, and carrying groceries. Also, the stronger we are, the less stress we place on our joints with daily activities, which prevents injuries and arthritis.

IHP Networking Sessions
Networking sessions are a great way to meet with others also in the IHP program. We hope you can join us.
In Anchorage, they are held on the third Tuesday and fourth Thursday of each month.

In Juneau, the sessions are held one time per month on a Wednesday in Egan Library 211, from 12-1pm.
