Individualized Health Planning (IHP) Sessions
Sign up while there is still availability! Registration is open for the Individualized Health Planning sessions (IHPs), which begin October 5. Take this opportunity to sign up for our series of six face-to-face health-planning sessions with an experienced wellness consultant. These sessions include biometric screenings for blood pressure, body composition, and cholesterol.
If you are interested in improving your overall health, reducing stress, eating better, managing your weight, heart health, or developing an exercise or training plan, you'll want to make sure and sign-up today.
In Anchorage, we've added an off-campus IHP session location at the Center for Human Development, located at 2702 Gambell Street, Suite 103, on the corner of Gambell and Northern Lights.
UAF IHP participants will get their choice of an SRC pass or an Alaska Club pass (good for one month), after attending their third session.

Pilates and Tai Chi to start in October
Anchorage: Pilates
Join UA Health in Action for Pilates on Wednesdays, October 28 - December 16.
Select from two available class times:
1:15 - 2:00pm in the Professional Studies Building, room 219;
or 4:15 - 5:00pm in the *Social Science Building, room 119.

Pilates is core strength training done on the floor to help tone muscle, increase circulation, relieve stress, increase strength and flexibility, and improve overall mobility and precision of body movement. All UAA faculty and staff members are invited to participate.
Fairbanks: Modified Tai Chi
We had such a great response to the summer modified Tai Chi we thought we'd offer it again this fall. The 30-minute classes will be on Tuesdays, October 27 - December 22, from 12:10 - 12:40pm in the IARC Lobby.

Tai Chi Reminder
Tai Chi is designed to release stress, stimulate circulation, increase flexibility, and improve balance. No experience or equipment is required. All UAF faculty and staff members are invited to participate.

Come for a free health screening to benchmark your health before the holidays. Wellness consultants will be on hand to answer questions about the IHP program and schedule sessions.

Make sure to have your annual exam this year and enter your information in the GTP Tracking System.
Breast cancer screening age recommendations
According to Susan G. Komen for the Cure® and the American Cancer Society:
· Ages 20 and up: self-examinations monthly
· Ages 20-39: clinical breast exam every 3 years
· Ages 40 and up: mammography and clinical breast exam annually
Prostate cancer screening age recommendations
According to the American Cancer Society:
· Ages 50 and up: PSA and DRE annually for men who are at average risk and have at least a 10-year life expectancy
· Ages 40-45: PSA and DRE annually for men who are at high risk, such as African American men and men with a strong family history of one or more first-degree relatives diagnosed at an early age
The GTP Tracking System can be used year-round to record your healthful habits and activity. However, you only earn rewards during an incentive campaign. The next GTP incentive campaign starts February 2010.

All women (and some men) are at risk for breast cancer. Statistically, about one in seven women will get breast cancer over a 90-year life span. Although risk does increase with age, there are ways you can reduce other risk factors.

Prostate cancer affects one in six men, and is the most common non-skin cancer in America. There are several risk factors linked to prostate cancer. The primary offenders include age, race and genetic history, while secondary factors include diet and lifestyle.
