What is a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Program?
A CSA program is a way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer, usually on a subscription basis. The benefits of participating in a CSA program are many, for both the consumer and the farmer.
Farmer benefits:
Subscription payments help farmers' cash flow.
Develop a relationship with the people who eat the food farmers' grow.
Consumer benefits:
Eat farm-fresh food.
Be exposed to new vegetables and new ways of cooking.
Develop a relationship with the farmer who grows your food.
CSA Programs in Alaska
There are farms all over the state that offer CSA programs. Some of them offer programs on a subscription basis and others operate on a "shares" basis where consumers purchase a share of the crops for that season. Other farms include the option to buy shares of eggs, homemade bread, meat, cheese, fruit, flowers or other farm products along with veggies. Check out the links on the right to find a CSA program near you.
CSA Programs with UA Pick-up Locations
WIN for Alaska, Inc. on behalf of the university has been working with CSA programs in Alaska and Washington to set up convenient pick-up sites on campuses. Currently, Glacier Valley Farm offers pick-up locations on the UAA campus (including at the UC) and are working on a pick-up spot in Palmer. Full Circle Farm offers pick up locations across the state and on the UAA and UAF campuses and near the UAS campus. For pick-up locations and CSA program details, send an email or visit the farm websites listed to the right.
