Who Can You Trust: How to find reliable health information on the web
When a Google search of the phrase "health resources" brings up 565,000,000 references, it's hard to know what information you can trust. Below are some questions to ask about the websites you visit:
Who? Do qualified professionals staff the site? Look for the authors' names and credentials. Have experts reviewed the content for accuracy?
What? What is the message and is it in line with other reliable sources? Question information that contradicts common knowledge. Obtaining a link to another site may not be a guarantee of quality, as any site can link to any other site without permission.
When? When was the site last updated? Sites should be dated and updated frequently to stay current with changing science.
Where? Where is the information coming from? Government, education, and organization sites generally provide reliable information. Look for web addresses ending in .gov, .edu, or .org.
Commercial sites (.com) may not offer reliable information. Check their qualifications and integrity.
Why? If the site is selling a product or service, be aware that information on their site may be biased.
A helpful site when screening for fraudulent health information is the National Council Against Health Fraud site at www.ncahf.org.
The Resources page of the UA Health In Action website has many reliable web sites for your reference.
