Meet Judy Ellenburg
WIN for Alaska, Inc. Wellness Consultant
About her background:
Judy's love of science started early. She grew up in Guelph, Ontario, Canada surrounded by agriculture and generations of veterinarians.
She worked at the Ontario Veterinary College and studied at the University of Guelph for 13 years. During the course of her work with animals of all shapes and sizes, she found herself drawn to the health sciences.
Her first career in animal health provided her with a strong background, which developed into a more focused education in nutrition. Extensive travels around the world opened her mind to many modalities of eating and living.
Her drive for a more comprehensive look at nutrition moved her to study at Bastyr University in Seattle, Washington in 1998. While earning her master’s degree in nutrition, she cooked and provided vegetarian fare at the school. It was there that she met her to-be husband (who was born and raised in Alaska). In 2004, they moved to Anchorage with their son Willy.
About being a Wellness Consultant:
Judy has been providing nutrition education (with a primary focus on whole food nutrition) in Anchorage since 2005. She coaches people in the art of taking the time to plan, shop, cook and eat their way to health and wellness. She believes that everyone instinctively has a pretty good idea of what direction they want to go in regards to their health and fitness. As part of the WIN for Alaska, Inc. team, she strives to provide the tweak in the direction that folks sometimes need to get there.
"I love that I work with a cutting-edge team of professionals and that I have the opportunity to serve a community of like-minded individuals. Learning from co-workers and clients is a real bonus to my work environment."
About fitness:
"I was never really into 'fitness,' except casual outdoor recreation (tennis, hiking, swimming, and volleyball), until I met a co-worker in the mid 80’s who introduced me to “working out.” Now, I have a great balance between outdoor fun and my regular gym workouts. I believe the work place is a perfect place to find a workout partner and also to be a positive influence on others."
Judy's tips for wellness:
- Shop the perimeter of the grocery store where the fresh food is located. Better yet, take the time to go to the local farmer’s market.
- Spend your money wisely to feed yourself well. Your body will repay you many times over.
- Stock your workplace with healthful snacks/mini-meals. You will save even more money (and time on the cardio machine)!
- Eat vegetarian at least twice a week. Eating fewer animal products can decrease your risk of degenerative diseases.
- Find something fun for your fitness that shifts your focus. Swimming is my escape, but a good game of squash is a close second!
