Biometric Screenings:

A biometric screening is a short screening that determines the risk level of a person for certain diseases and medical conditions. The University of Alaska encourages staff or students to complete this type of health screening so they can start thinking about their health and pursue treatment if needed.

Results of the biometric screening can help to identify various diseases or health problems, and allow you to work with your physician to lower your health risks for certain conditions.

Results of any screening performed are confidential and be assured that WIN for Alaska, Inc. employees abide by all HIPAA regulations.

Screenings are 10 minutes in duration and require registration. Please note that an informed consent form must be signed prior to screenings.

1. Cholesterol Screenings: The cholesterol screening is performed with a "finger-stick" test that measures full lipid levels. There is no requirement for the participant to fast (abstinence from food). Water should be consumed and is encouraged. Participants should continue any directions for prescription medications.

2. Cholesterol and Glucose Screenings: This test provides a fasted blood glucose number as well as triglyceride levels that can be helpful in determining the participant’s risk of pre-diabetes or Type 2 Diabetes. This test is similar to the test above but is performed on fasted participants only (abstinence from food for 10-12 hours). Water should be consumed and is encouraged.

3. Blood Pressure: While you are seated the wellness consultant uses an automated cuff to determine both your diastolic and systolic blood pressure numbers.

At the time of screening the participant can do any or all of the following:

1. Body Composition: Body composition evaluation is useful in determining risk factors. The evaluation of body composition includes the following parameters.

2. Height: Using a standard tape measure the participant’s height is measured.

3. Weight: Using a weigh scale the participant’s weight is measured.

4. Waist: Using a standard tape measure at the level of the navel a waist measurement is taken.

5. Body Fat Percentage and Body Mass Index (BMI): Using an Omron Fat Loss Monitor (Bio-impedance technology) both these indexes are determined. Please note that this test is ideally performed on a well hydrated participant.

[You must be in a health plan eligible position to register for screenings and massage.]
