Work Out Gadgets:
To buy or not to buy

January is a time of New Year’s resolutions. Often these resolutions are fitness or weight loss related, causing people to buy the newest and best work-out equipment to jump start their success.

We have all seen the numerous fitness equipment infomercials. The promises are beyond absurdity. Get perfect abs in just 10 minutes a day. Sculpt your body in no time. Most machines laud patented revolutionary technology designed to miraculously get you in shape and help you lose weight with minimal effort.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has provided the following advice to avoid purchasing equipment that is a waste of your money and time:

  • Purchase equipment that is adaptable and works multiple body parts at the same time.

  • Avoid equipment that claims to target fat in a specific area; we cannot reduce fat in one area of our body; spot reducing is impossible.

  • Use common sense when evaluating products’ claims. An example would be a product that touts 5 lbs of fat loss a week with two minutes of activity a day or creating an abdominal “six-pack” by vibrating the stomach muscles without you having to do any work; these claims are just not possible.

  • Analyze the testimonials and product-user pictures carefully.

  • Check out the details on the warranties and return policies.

  • Call and ask questions of the customer service hotline, including requesting product information or DVDs showing the equipment being used.

  • Check out the company with the Better Business Bureau, FTC, or other consumer agencies.
